Authentication Failed for JIRA Defect Tracking System

Created on

Problem

I get "Authentication Failed for defect tracking system. Please check the username and password and try again. The maximum number of failed login attempts has been reached"

Cause

Either JIRA credentials is entered incorrectly.

Fix

In Zephyr, JIRA is integrated by two mechanisms. The first is at Administrative Level and the second is at a user level.

The Administrative level credentials are set up under 'Department'->'Administration'->'Defect Tracking'. See the screenshot adminLevel.PNG

This location is required in order to populate the projects drop down, grab the data to populate the charts, and also to grab any metadata such as custom fields. This is why it is very important that a JIRA admin with all these permissions is entered in this location.

For User level, it is located 'Defect Tracking'->'New' Tab->Scroll down to the bottom. In the bottom right are two button 'Cancel' and 'Save'. Next to those is the 'Reset' button. Click here and this is where the user will be able to reset their JIRA password. See screenshot userLevel.PNG

The user level integration is required in order to actually push and pull defects from Zephyr into JIRA. It is also how the user is restricted to seeing only projects in JIRA they are assigned too from Zephyr. This is also the location where a new JIRA password will need to be placed any time the JIRA password is reset.

Before you reset the password as suggested above please do the following on JIRA side

  1. As JIRA admin-> click on COG wheel at the top->User Management.
  2. Reset the failed attempts and set the failed attempts to high number. Please make sure to do this step before you reset password in Zephyr.
