JIRA Troubleshooting: When the defect tracking System is not reachable. Please check the URL and try again. (503) Service Unavailable

Created on

Problem

I integrated JIRA with Zephyr but I am getting an error that says the defect tracking system is not reachable. What am I doing wrong?

Cause

The URL is incorrect or the JIRA admin does not have proper permissions.

Fix

When testing your JIRA setup, you may type in the correct URL of your JIRA instance and add the correct soap extension of /rpc/soap/jirasoapservice-v2. If API calls haven't been enabled inside the JIRA server, you will see an error in Zephyr stating the defect tracking system is not reachable. Please check the URL and try again. (503) Service Unavailable.

To verify whether your URL is correct or not, take the URL you have entered into the Zephyr administration screen for the JIRA Integration setup (http://<your_jira_server>/rpc/soap/jirasoapservice-v2) and plug it directly into a browser. If using an https connection, include it.

If the URL is correct and API calls haven't been enabled within JIRA, you will see the following return value in your browser:

HTTP Status 503 - Remote API not activated for this JIRA installation.

If this is the case, follow the instructions listed in our support documentation to accept API calls in JIRA.:
http://support.yourzephyr.com/product_help/4.5/Administering_Zephyr/Defect_Tracking/JIRA/JIRA_Plugin_Installation.htm

When the URL is correct and API calls have been enabled within JIRA, you will see the following return value in your browser:

jirasoapservice-v2

Hi there, this is an AXIS service!
Perhaps there will be a form for invoking the service here...

If you see neither of these two returns, then the URL is actually incorrect, please review the following instructions to determine the correct URL:

When the JIRA defect tracking option is chosen, the following JIRA URL is needed:

http://<your_jira_server>/rpc/soap/jirasoapservice-v2

where <your_jira_server> includes the name/IP address and the port of the JIRA server. Please do not enter the URL that is used to access JIRA directly from your browser.

(E.g. if you currently access your JIRA server with the following URL - http://jiraserver:81 - then you should enter - http://jiraserver:81/rpc/soap/jirasoapservice-v2 as the URL)

Also, a valid JIRA admin-level username/password that has access to all the projects being tracked is needed to fetch data for defect metrics. Each user in the Zephyr system will need their own JIRA username/password to File and Search for defects in their own Desktops.
