How to map a drive in Windows to be visible for Zephyr imports

Created on

Problem

Shared / mapped drive is not visible from Zephyr imports. Error: invalid folder

Cause

Due to Microsoft restrictions, Systems users don’t inherit all permissions to the drive mounted on the Zephyr Server machine.  The mapped drive is accessible as an admin user, but it isn’t accessible to the System User. The Zephyr Server is installed as a System User.

The Server needs to run as a System User and this cannot be changed. It is possible to alter the mapping of the drive mounted so that it is accessible to the all System Users.

Fix

Below steps describe a popular way to get over this restriction. However, *USE AT YOUR OWN RISK*. Zephyr does not support the product and is provided as is without any guarantee.

1. Download SysinternalsSuite at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062.aspx

2. Open an elevated cmd.exe prompt (Run as administrator)

3. Elevate again to root using PSExec.exe:

Navigate to the folder containing SysinternalsSuite and execute the following command "psexec -s cmd.exe" you are now inside of a prompt that is "nt authority\system" and you can prove this by typing "whoami"

4. Create the persistent mapped drive as the SYSTEM account with the following command "net use z: \\[Server Name]\[Share Name] /user:[Logon Server]\[User Name] [Password] /persistent:yes"

Now your UNC path should pick up the files.

Note: You can only remove this mapping the same way you created it, from the SYSTEM account. If you need to remove it, follow steps 3 and 4 but change the command on step 4 to: "net use z: /delete"

NOTE: The newly created mapped drive will now appear for ALL users of this system but they will see it displayed as "Disconnected Network Drive (Z:)". It may claim to be disconnected but it will work for everyone.
